Gibsons and Langdale History
Gibsons and Langdale are both pieces of Sunshine Coast real estate settled in the late 1800’s. The area is still as beautiful as it was then, but not as isolated. In fact many residents commute daily to work in Vancouver, some share the ride in van or car pools. That’s a drastic change from the regular trips to the city made by the founder, George Gibson. In order to sell his produce and bring back supplies, he rowed his own boat all the way.
Gibsons’ local economy is still fueled by logging and fishing as it was in George Gibson’s day. Employers like Howe Sound Pulp and Paper provide local jobs and tax revenues. New factors affecting the local economy include some tourism and the original work by artisans and crafters created right here.
An Outdoor Paradise
Only 4 miles and a few minutes’ drive separate Gibsons from Langdale, so both towns are graced by the extraordinary natural beauty and fine sunny weather that are hallmarks of living along the Sunshine Coast. Langdale is home to the BC Ferry terminal linking Vancouver with the towns and lush scenery of the Sunshine Coast. There are lots of outdoor pursuits. Try your luck catching Coho and chum salmon in Langdale Creek. Or take a boat from the Langdale ferry terminal to explore Keats or Gambier Island.
There are great views of the Coast Mountains and Howe Sound at Langdale Heights Par 3 Golf Course and you can play 9 holes of golf while you’re looking. Hopkins Landing welcomes visitors for a swim or walk along the beach. Depending on your focus, roaming the Seawalk and Heritage Walk in Gibsons harbor will highlight the working of an active port or the beauty of the water setting. You might even recognize something as Molly’s Reach café and the pier were used as locations for the popular TV series “The Beachcombers”.
The public boat ramp and beaches here are convenient and fun for locals and visitors alike. Pebbles Beach and Ocean Beach Esplanade are only two of your choices. The public pool in Gibsons is a great place for playing in the water or learning to swim.
The Soames Hill Trail spans the distance between Langdale and Gibsons. The most spectacular view is found at the top of the wooden stair climb. It may look arduous but most hikers say it’s possible to do and absolutely worth the effort when you look out on the imposing views at the top.
